Continuing our series of weekly summaries of startup news in English, here are some highlights from last week:
–Well known expert in digital innovation Luli Radfahrer (who is a professor, critic, and consultant at the center of Brazilian digital trends since the 1990s) has released a new book, Enciclopédia da Nuvem. The title means “The Cloud Encyclopedia” and the book is described as a guide to 100 opportunities and 550 online tools that can be used to inspire and expand ones business.

–Social network Atlz specializes in career networking and job recruiting for college students and recent graduates. Though only out in beta for two months, Atlz has 10,000 registered users and is now looking to bring in alumni as well as businesses. The startup has been funded so far by the founder, Paula Guedes, who studied and worked in the US for 11 years. No fees are charged to participating businesses or job seekers.

–A mentoring event for startups in the health sector will be held May 12 and 13 in São Paulo. Organized by EmpreenderSaúde, the event, StartupSaúde, will bring together selected mentors and startups to refine business plans, create prototypes and evaluate possible partnerships.

–City guide Guidu, widely used in twelve cities, is launching a special membership club called Guidu VIP. Participants pay a monthly or semi-annual membership fee and then get offers and discounts at the top restaurants, bars and other entertainment venues. Founder Marcus Andrade says there are already 500 members and more than 40 participating venues after just a few days. Guidu’s city guides are used by 400,000 people a month.

–Classifieds site Fisgo has received BR$2.5 million from the NascenTI fund, run by Confrapar. Fisgo is a classifieds aggregator for real estate and motor vehicles which was launched in 2010 by founders Hélio Lemos, Frederico Alves and Eduardo Rodrigues. It now lists as many as 1 million ads for cars and 2 million for real estate. NascenTI is a partially state-supported fund designed to encourage innovation in technology, oil and gas, entertainment, telecom, education and energy in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

–The MPE Brazil prize is taking applicants. The prize aims to reward small and medium-sized businesses that demonstrate innovation, good management practices, and that do business across economic sectors.
