UniPartners, a new fund created by five business people with 30 years experience in the market has already invested in six startups: Solutis, e-Z Vida, MTM Tecnologia, Gran TI, Smart Energia and CMS. The group is focused on investments in the IT sector that function in the areas of health and sustainable use of natural resources. The founders are Ana Paula Costa Braun, Jack de Oliveira Cavalcanti Jr, João Francisco da Silva Mendes Neto, Likiso Hattori and Liliane Moura Bender (see their profiles here). Read more…

I recently had lunch with Indio Brasileiro, a well-known Brazilian internet professional with an extensive resume, from executive to entrepreneur to investor (check it out here).
Among the stories and opinions he shared, I was delighted that he said yes when I asked if I could re-publish part of his book e-c@usos, which he edited and published in 2009.

The Hub São Paulo and Artemisia are once again putting on the startup pitch competition called StartUpLab. It will take place on July 19th. Time for pitchers and those who wish to watch to sign up!
Startups that want to present their businesses will be evaluated by panels composed of potential investors, consultants, and professionals in the field; they will present before the attending public as well.

The evening of May 5th Niklas Zennström spoke at Insper in São Paulo. Known as a co-founder of Skype, Kazaa, LastFM, Joost and Joltid, Zennström also founded the investment company Atomico Ventures.
Niklas came to visit Brazil about a year and a half ago - he has a representative here, the executive Carlos Pires, who will host an exclusive interview for our readers.

The belief in fast money has long been demystified: that in this new global digital economy all you need is an idea and you can sell it and get rich. In reality it takes a business plan, a management team and product development to convince investors to give you their support.
Still, you hear plenty of people talking about opening a startup just to seek investment and sell it. This isn’t wrong, but it isn’t the whole story. In Brazil (which is still developing a culture of angel investment in technology startups) and in Silicon Valley (which is full of success stories), there isn’t any single way to make it happen.
