Why will your startup fail?

Alexandre Fugita on January 05, 2009

I know, no one wants this and it’s a depressing title. But I saw a post in Techcrunch about the six reasons why your startup will fail. The post cites a more lengthy post written by Eric Karjaluoto, one of the founders of a startup called MakeFive. In this post Eric cites the six reasons and describes each one based on his own experience. Something that happened to him outside of Brazil, but it’s perfectly applicable here.

The first of these reasons is that no one is paying attention to what you are saying, even if it’s something really fantastic. Among other things I thinks he’s talking about the attention economy - that is, we all have very little time to dedicate to learning so many things, that we fail to notice something interesting, or it seems unimportant to us.

One of the other items debated is the determination to continue doing what you propose, even when you have to choose among the various cool ideas we all have each day. This certainty, not getting sidetracked by the hype of the moment, can be vital.

After talking about the various reasons the conclusion is particularly interesting. If you really want to launch a startup and have the entrepreneurial spirit nothing that someone says or bumps in the road should stop you from executing a good idea. It’s worth reading!
