Entrepreneur of the year and 49 startups to watch

ovelha11ResultsOn Day (sponsored by the magazine ResultsOn: Intelligent Business) was held again recently, to mark the release of a new issue of the magazine. This event was called Black Sheep, as it focused on selecting the Entrepreneur of the Year and the 49 Startups to Watch - all of them involving innovative people who don’t follow the crowd.

I arrived as Paula Signorini of Kingo Labs was speaking about how to go from a draft of your ideas to a final business plan. I was surprised to hear her say that Kingo originally only received 1/4 of the investment funds it needed to operate for a year, and yet spent less than half of that in the first quarter. Sometimes you have to be brave and set aside the dream ideas you are most attached to, she said: “If the market wants Twitter solutions now, then good! Let all the dream ideas stay in the drawer and do what the market needs for now.” Excellent!

After that Romero Rodrigues explained how Grupo Buscapé positioned itself to provide services to independent app developers, publishers (like bloggers) and advertisers. “Five years ago, if someone wanted us to do a data base, we’d never share the principles behind our business: all that information we’d spent so much time researching refining and organizing. Today, it’s with pleasure that we make almost everything easily available to anyone who wants to be our partner.”

A recent example, according to Romero, is Lomadee, a platform that allows app developers to get APIs and create solutions that generate more clicks on the blogs and sites of web publishers, or via mobile Internet access. “It’s good for the stores that advertise products, it’s good for Buscapé, it’s good for bloggers and good for developers: everyone earns a percentage in this type of arrangement, which will only grow.”

Fábio Belotti of SP Angels also spoke, addressing legal issues relating to entrepreneurs and investors. There were other interesting talks, too, and in the end the announcement of the results:
